Celestial signs Technology Agreement with IBM Corp for J2ME Solutions
Vancouver, Canada and Bangalore, India, November 9, 2004 – Celestial Systems today announced that it has signed a technology agreement with the Pervasive Computing Group at IBM Corporation.
Under the terms of the agreement, Celestial will offer complete software solutions to customers based on IBM’s Workplace Client Technology – Micro Edition (WCT-ME). The WCT-ME solutions from IBM are part of the Websphere solution from IBM, targeted specifically at embedded client devices. At the core of the WCT-ME solution, is IBM’s J9 Java Virtual Machine (JVM) offering. The WCT-ME offerings are a comprehensive solution for embedded products, and are offered with full J2ME compliance and Java certification. The solution includes a wide range of middleware components running on top of the JVM, like the Services Management Framework (SMF), DB2e, Message Queue MQe, and SyncML. These middleware components are useful in integrating the embedded device to the enterprise, by offering a high level of connectivity. WCT-ME also comes with a rich set of development tools which are Eclipse based, called WSDD. WSDD tools include utilities like Smartlinker for optimisation of resources, Micro Analyser for collecting performance data, and an Emulator interface that supports a wide range of standard operating environments.
Celestial’s offerings to embedded product manufacturers will now extend beyond the embedded Linux OS, tools and firmware offerings to also include a proven J2ME solution, allowing manufacturers to run embedded Java applications on their devices. “We have seen the rapid acceptance of Linux in the past two to three years in the embedded space. More recently, many embedded Linux users are also looking to embed J2ME solutions in their devices so as to be able to download and run Java applications on the device. We see this trend increasing with more and more deployment of connected devices,” said Sanjay Raina, President & CEO of Celestial Systems Inc.
The WCT-ME range of products will be suitable for manufacturers of embedded devices like cell phones, PDAs, handheld devices, Set Top Boxes, industrial devices, and many others. Celestial will offer support for most of the well-known J2ME configurations and profiles like CLDC, CDC, MIDP, Foundation, and Personal profiles. Additionally, IBM continues to add support for most popular Java Specifications Requests (JSRs) originating out of the Java Community Process (JCP). “WCT-ME’s strength lies in its strong middleware offerings that enable enterprise level connectivity, and their award winning WSDD development tools that make embedded Java development a lot easier. We expect that these unique advantages will offer a strong competitive advantage to our customers,” added Juan F. Moncada, Senior Manager- Technical of Celestial Systems Inc.
Celestial’s main objective would be to enable our growing customer base to embed the JVM into their products in a short period of time, implement the configurations and profiles required for their applications, and assist them in the TCK process to obtain Java certification. “We believe we can offer a significant differentiator to our customers by implementing their J2ME requirements in a relatively short period of time. Working in close co-operation with IBM, Celestial will offer extensive technical support, porting and integration services,” said Rohit Sharma, Country Manager, Celestial Systems India.
